New York leaves traffic cameras to local option: school-zone speed cameras and red-light cameras are allowed only where the state legislature has granted enabling authority, such as in New York City. They are not allowed statewide.

Rhode Island authorizes cameras with limits: red-light cameras and school-zone speed cameras are allowed under state enabling acts, but speed cameras are not open statewide. The school-zone cameras operate on active school days, from about 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Vermont has no general speed or red-light cameras. The only authorization is a temporary pilot under S.184 (Act 135 of 2024), which allows speed cameras in work zones on limited-access highways.
