LawLert exists so people don’t unknowingly break the law. That only works if you can trust what the app tells you — so accuracy isn’t a feature here, it’s the product. This page explains exactly how a rule earns its place on LawLert, and what we do when we don’t have a verified answer.
LawLert is an independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing any government entity — we simply gather public government law, cite it to its official source, and date it.
Where our sources come from
Rules are verified against an official or primary source: state statutes and administrative codes, government agency pages (departments of revenue, wildlife agencies, alcohol boards, customs authorities, the US State Department for international rules), enacted bills on a legislature’s own site, and court orders where a law has been blocked. We never publish law from blogs or forums.
93% of rules cite a source of that kind today. We’d rather show you the gap than round it away: most fishing regulations currently cite eRegulations, the commercial publisher that produces several states’ official regulation digests. It is accurate, and it is not the agency — so an ongoing sweep is moving those citations, and every other secondary mirror, to the issuing agency itself. That number goes up as the sweep runs.
The government sources we cite
These are the government domains behind LawLert’s state and local category rules, grouped by U.S. state. It is not the whole source list — fishing, hunting and international rules cite their own agencies, and each rule links its own source directly. Federal rules cite the agency that issues them — atf.gov and dea.gov among them — and the Code of Federal Regulations (ecfr.gov); international traveler rules cite the U.S. State Department (travel.state.gov) and each destination country’s own official government and embassy sources. Every individual law also links to its exact official source right on that law’s page in the app — including the specific county and city government codes behind local rules.

Every rule shows two things right on the page: a link to the official source it came from, and the date we last verified it. If you ever want to check our work, the receipt is one tap away — that transparency is deliberate. A rule with no source and no date is a rumor; we don’t publish rumors.
Verified when written, re-checked on a schedule
A rule is verified against its source at the moment it’s written — not recalled from memory. After that, scheduled reviews re-check the data: recurring staleness sweeps across categories, seasonal checks for time-sensitive rules (burn bans, fishing and hunting seasons, date-driven deadlines), and deeper periodic re-verifications. When something real changes, it flows into the What Changed feed and into push alerts for people tracking that category.
When we don’t know, we say so
Ask LawLert answers only from verified rules. When nothing verified matches your question, you get an honest refusal — not a fluent guess. Unanswered questions are logged (anonymously) and directly shape what we verify next, so the honest “not yet” today becomes a sourced answer soon.
Corrections
If you believe something on LawLert is wrong or out of date, email support@lawlertapp.com. We re-verify against the official source and correct anything that doesn’t hold up — that includes updating the rule, its citation, and its verified date.

The honest limits
LawLert is general legal information, not legal advice, and no summary is a full statement of the law. Laws change between our checks, enforcement varies, and your specific situation may turn on details a summary can’t capture. The official source linked on each rule is the last word — and for anything high-stakes, a licensed attorney in that jurisdiction is the right call. What we promise is simple: everything we show you is sourced and dated, and when we don’t know, we’ll tell you.
