Without a Rhode Island permit, you may carry a handgun in a vehicle only on trips the law lists: store to home, home and work, to a dealer for sale, to a gunsmith, or to a buy-back site. It must be unloaded, ammunition must not be readily accessible from the passenger area, and with no separate compartment the gun or ammunition must be in a locked container. Trips between your home or work and a target range need the gun unloaded and in a separate container. Other carry needs a Rhode Island permit; an out-of-state permit helps only if you are merely driving through.
